چکیده

A large-scale investigation into the perception of contrast in color images was performed. Psychophysical experiments were performed to determine the influence of image lightness, chroma, and sharpness transforms on perceived image contrast and observer preference. The influence of these transforms on perceived contrast was investigated separately by independent soft-copy, paired-comparison tests of contrast perception and image preference. The perception of contrast across transformations was also investigated, as was the perception of image contrast relative to the most preferred image manipulation. In all, four experiments of contrast perception and image preference were performed by at least thirty-two observers each. Results of the lightness, chroma, and sharpness-contrast experiments indicate perceived image contrast is a function of multiple image characteristics as opposed to simply being a function of the dynamic range of image intensity. In the lightness-contrast experiments, images of identical white and black points were scaled to have significant differences in contrast based on their manipulations from the

Title: Perceived Image Contrast and Observer Preference Ii. Empirical Modeling of Perceived Image Contrast and Observer Preference Data

Psychophysical experimentation was performed on the perceived contrast of color images and its effect on observer preference. Goals of this research included the following: investigation into the roles of image lightness, chroma and sharpness manipulations on perceived image contrast; modeling the perception of image contrast with physical image parameters; the relation of perceived contrast of...

Effect of Lightness on Blackness Preference of Black Fabrics

In this paper, the effect of lightness on blackness preference of 216 black fabrics prepared by printing method is investigated. 18 observers including of 9 males and 9 females are asked to firstly rank order black fabrics with the same lightness values according to their preference. In the next step, observers are asked to define their blackness preference for blacks with different L values. R...

Influence of chroma variations on naturalness and image quality of stereoscopic images

The computational view on image quality of Janssen and Blommaert states that the quality of an image is determined by the degree to which the image is both useful (discriminability) and natural (identifiability). This theory is tested by creating two manipulations. Firstly, multiplication of the chroma values of each pixel with a constant in the CIELab color space, i.e., chroma manipulation, is...

Considering the Surround

When viewing images, the relative luminance of the surround has a profound impact on the apparent contrast of the image. For this reason, photographic transparencies intended for projection in a darkened room are produced with an objective contrast substantially higher than that necessary for optimum reproduction as prints viewed in an illuminated surround. The dark surround causes the image el...

Context affects lightness at the level of surfaces.

Visual perception of object attributes such as surface lightness is crucial for successful interaction with the environment. How the visual system assigns lightness to image regions is not yet understood. It has been shown that the context in which a surface is embedded influences its perceived lightness, but whether that influence involves predominantly low-, mid-, or high-level visual mechani...
